Shenanarts is a cool theater group that performs in Verona at Stage 4. Most of the plays we've seen feature middle and high school students. They often like to cast small children in adult roles. In Tommy, for example, a young boy was playing a physician.
The stage they perform on is almost like a theater in the round. The audience sits on two sides, so the actors come very far out into the middle of the performance area. They also make good use of the stage exits; you'll often see actors walking up from behind you or parading out the door. They have a good sound system and elaborate lighting. They use technology like a fog machine and a widescreen TV backdrop to create special effects.
I'm always impressed by the scope and complexity of the projects they take on. They do very mature performances like Jeckyll & Hyde, Chicago, and Aida. They stay busy all year; it seems like there's always a new show around the corner. Website: http://www.shenanarts.org/ Theater address (from their website): "We are located at the intersection of Route 11 and Hwy 612 in Verona, VA between Rite Aid and Dollar General. From Interstate 81, take Exit 227, the Verona Exit, go west to second stop light, Stage4 is on the right." |
