Geocaching

The city of Staunton has been very supportive of geocaching, encouraging people to visit the parks and natural areas to plant and find caches.  We've seen caches at Montgomery Hall Park, Betsy Bell Mountain, Reservoir Hill Park, and even in the police station parking garage.

What is geocaching?
Geocaching is modern treasure hunting.  You get a small waterproof container and put a few things in it: a log book, a pen, a couple small trinkets.  Then you hide it somewhere that is publicly accessible.  You use a GPS (global positioning system) to determine your longitude and latitude, then you post those coordinates online for folks to see.

Then other people will get your coordinates and seek out your treasure.  They plug your coordinates into their own GPS.  When they find the cache, they write their name in the log and take a small trinket.  They will also leave a small trinket of their own.

You can locate caches many places online.  The most popular is www.geocaching.comClick here to see all caches in Staunton.

There is a lot more to geocaching than what I've described.  Geocaching.com can give you a lot of information.  Have fun exploring!
