"Andromeda" by Deena Warner

"Andromeda" by Gina Wisker
Sleek black rocks washed by the wild white spray
On the edge of old Jaffa
Near the fish restaurants
Now overlooked by Napoleon's many statues
A bit of a market, new cobbles.
It seems to me, Andromeda, that your
Vulnerability
Strapped to the rocks, a sea beast's prey,
Was their essential guilt and fear
"here is our best" they said, offering you up
to the wild waves and the snorting beast, serpentine, emerging
toothed from the surf
property, power, peace dependent on you and as he slavered
aware of the delicate morsel awaiting him . . .
to the rescue
patriarchy's eternal superhero better side,
Perseus
On a winged horse.
The sea beast had no chance
And you were his gift.
Arab or Jew?
No bombs, no bulldozers, no border disputes
Just a sea beast
A winged hero and a vulnerable princess.
It didn't seem so important then,
Out by the black rocks.
